Our Digital Equipment Toolbox

If you are a technical geek and a gadget collector, then this page is for you. Being a believer in that he with the most toys at the end wins, the studio loves to have the latest and greatest technologies that help us do our job. If you are ready for some real techno babble, then here you go. If not, run for the hills and view our gallery pages to enjoy the finished product regardless how we got there.

Formats

The studio primarily shoots what is known as a camera RAW format. Yes, we are RAW shooters. There is a lot of debate on JPG vs. RAW and it as bad as a philosophical debate on choosing a religion. We find that RAW provides much more latitude, allows us to control the color space after the fact, creates images larger than 8 bit, and improves our workflow. During post processing, the studio adjusts white balancing, exposure, etc. as necessary without degrading the negative. Edit JPG files creates noise and you loose image quality every time you save the working file. Now with Adobe CS 2, ACR, and Bridge, all editing can be done without affecting the negative since all edits are stored in the side-car file.

Having digital capture also provides us great flexibility. Considering we do most post-processing in Adobe Photoshop, this saves us a step of having to scan negatives. It also allows us to create multiple archives for disaster recovery. For those who believe that digital technology is not there, we have enlarged up to 12 by 18 inch prints with no issues with just 4 mega pixel cameras. Now that our cameras shoot 8 mega pixels, just imagine the possibilites.

For portable flash and location shots, we use the Canon 580 EX Speedlites. When on location and in need of a little more, we use Canon's eTTL technology and Canon's Speedlight 430 EX's as slave flashes.
